This week at CES, Toyota is introducing a new vehicle dubbed the Concept-i that focuses on how to design a user experience for 21st century mobility. As the name implies, this is still very much an experiment, but it gives hints at the direction Toyota will be taking in the coming years.
User Interface vs Expeience
We’re all familiar with the idea of user interfaces (UI) from all of the devices we use ranging from our smartphones to our microwaves. UI is a subset of user experience (UX) that covers the visual aspect of how we interact with devices. UX encompasses UI plus the way the actual hardware feels and operates.
A classic example is the difference between Apple’s iPhone and many low-cost Android phones. Apple doesn’t sell inexpensive phones that compete at the low end and only uses its software on its own hardware. Even the lowest powered iPhones tend to be more powerful than cheap Android phones and Apple can optimize its software for a more constrained set of hardware. The result is that the perceived performance of the iPhone is much more consistent than the often laggy behavior of the competition. The cheap Android phone has a UI that doesn’t look fundamentally different from the grid of icons on an iPhone, but the user experience is dramatically different.
In the world of cars, many of the OEM infotainment systems introduced over the past decade have been examples of terrible UX with unresponsive and cluttered interfaces that seemed to make it harder to do things we’d been doing effortlessly for decades like changing radio stations or the temperature. The definitive case study here is the MyFord Touch system introduced in 2011. It provided an interface to the audio system, navigation, climate control and mobile phone. But the touch targets were small, reactions to taps were slow and it frequently crashed. In 2015 Ford began replacing it with SYNC 3 which addressed all of these problems.
