174 motorists killed on Dubai roads in 2016!

The department issued 175,000 fines for driving on the hard shoulder, and 35,000 tickets were issued to drivers who did not maintain space between vehicles.

Despite traffic safety campaigns launched by the Dubai Police, the number of road deaths in the emirate has increased in 2016 compared to last year. In the first 11 months of the year, 174 motorists were killed on Dubai roads as compared to 122 during the same period last year.

The main cause of deaths was speeding, said a top official. Brigadier Saif Mohair Al Mazroui, director of the General Department of Traffic, said that not abiding by traffic rules, speeding, not paying attention while driving, failure to leave enough distance between vehicles, and not sticking to their respective lanes were the major reasons for accidents.

Brig Al Mazroui added that the Dubai Police launched the ‘Speed Kills’ campaign to raise awareness among drivers about the serious consequences of speeding. However, drivers continued to commit violations here, he said.

The department issued 175,000 fines for driving on the hard shoulder, and 35,000 tickets were issued to drivers who did not maintain space between vehicles this year; 47,000 motorists were also fined for using mobile phones while driving.

Motorists were also caught attempting to cheat traffic radars by slowing down when they were in proximity to these and then sped up after passing them, resulting in bad accidents.

The Dubai Police aims to achieve zero road deaths by traffic accidents by the year 2020.
