Bentley and Rolls-Royce are fierce competitors in the ultra-luxury car segment, but one thing the former has beaten the latter at is in the race to drop an SUV. The Bentayga has been stealing headlines for some time now. Meanwhile Rolls is still working on its SUV, codenamed Project Cullinan. The project is shrouded in secrecy, but BMW design chief Adrian van Hooydonk lifted the veil ever so slightly at the recent Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este during a chat with Top Gear Magazine.
Additional details about the upcoming Rolls-Royce Cullinan SUV have emerged as design and development of the car progresses. Most notably, it seems likely that the company’s first off-roader will receive its trademark coach/suicide doors.
While speaking with Car Advice at the IAA Frankfurt Motor Show 2015, the company’s director of design Giles Taylor outlined the important of the vehicle’s design.
“It’s got to be Rolls-Royce – that’s the biggest part of the brief to meet. An undeniable, natural, authentic Rolls-Royce that just happens to have four-wheel drive and can go off-road if necessary. We’ll always get elegance into that formula.”
While the company’s SUV seems all but confirmed to reach the market, the marque’s communications manager James Warren revealed that the project is still in its infancy. Consequently, we’re not going to see the Cullinan SUV for quite a few years.
“That’s the trouble – it’s still such an early stage in the development. We were very eager with Project Cullinan – it was such a talked-about notion – that we were very happy to tell you this is going on. But there’s not a massive amount to talk about right now. These things are all being decided in due course. We’re talking years not months away, so those kind of thoughts are not even formed yet.”
When the car does launch, it is tipped to be underpinned by a brand new aluminium architecture from the company. When the car arrives, it is speculated that up to 1500 units could be sold annually around the world.
