“DON’T BE A VICTIM OF ODOMETER ROLLBACK IN USED CARS”

Lack of facilities to detect odometer tampering in Dubai is hurting used car buyers, with many falling prey to shady dealers who cheat unsuspecting customers.

Odometer roll back is being a common practice in Dubai when unauthorized dealers are selling used car. Motorists in Dubai are calling on the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) to make odometer rollback detection part of vehicle inspection.

According to many motorists, who have fall prey to odometer fraud, dealers are getting away with the malpractice because none of the vehicle inspection centres in the city detect odometer tampering.

Sultan Al Marzouqi, director of RTA’s Vehicle Licensing Department, said that according to the prevailing laws, RTA can provide the documents or certificate of proof only when requested by an authorised government entity and in this case by Dubai Courts.

He said that the annual vehicle inspection for vehicle registration only tests the vehicle for its road worthiness, which includes safety, and part of the inspection is to record the vehicle’s existing odometer reading.

“Odometer tampering is not part of the road worthiness and hence it is not under the RTA’s jurisdiction during the vehicle inspection, but the functionality of the odometer itself is a part of the parameters and checked while undergoing the registration or renewal test,” he said.

However, he added: “As part of our ongoing efforts, RTA is reviewing its current procedures which include exploring the tools to minimise any meter tampering.”

A salesman at Sharjah’s used car market admitted that odometer rollback is a common practice and dealers resort to the malpractice to get a better deal.

“I have been working in the used market for the last 25 years and I have commonly seen odometer tampering. Dealers get away with the practice because there is no way anyone can prove it,” said the salesman on the condition of anonymity.

He said one easy way to check for odometer fraud is to compare the kilometre reading in the odometer with the last service reading.

However, for those vehicles which have not been maintained at an agency or the previous owner have not kept a record of maintenance, it is near impossible to detect tampering.

PROTECTION FROM FRAUD

Hundreds of motorists have faced odometer fraud and many wonder how it is done and how to detect it.

Gulf News spoke with an engineer to get a peek in to mechanism of an odometer.

“In the old days the speedo head had to be removed and inside it was a tumble system with wheels so you could turn the wheels as required but nowadays it is all done through a computer and all the information is stored inside the ECU (electronic control unit),” said Gordon Ferguson, general manager of AAA Service Centre.

The information stored inside the ECU can be accessed if one has the correct software and knowledge.

He added: “Some people transfer the ECE from another car with lower kilometres and then reprogram it.”

Is there a way to detect the rollback?

“It is impossible for a layman to know if the odometer has been tampered with,” he said.

The Hyperloop is no longer just a pipe dream: in fact, if the technology stands up the first system will be in the UAE, possibly within five years.
There’s been speculation for a while, but it’s just been confirmed that the first Hyperloop will be built in the UAE. This means passengers will be able to travel between the emirates at 1,200 kilometres per hour (the max speed of a Boeing 747 is 825 kilometres per hour).
How do we know it’s happening here? Well Hyperloop One, the leading Hyperloop company in the world, has just signed a deal with RTA to intensely study building the first system here (for both passengers and cargo).
So yes, that means a journey from Dubai to Abu Dhabi will take only 12 minutes.
WHEN WILL IT ALL START? Well they’ve said that they could have an operational system connecting Dubai to the capital by 2021.
“We are now at a stage where, from a technological point of view, we could have a Hyperloop One system built in the UAE in the next five years. Our agreement with the RTA is the biggest step yet towards achieving this goal,” explained Rob Lloyd, CEO of Hyperloop One.
“Imagine stepping out of your villa in Dubai, into a self-driving vehicle that resembles your living room,and arriving just 48 minutes later at your office in Riyadh. That is what Hyperloop One can deliver,” explained Josh Giegel, Hyperloop One’s President of Engineering.
HOW WILL HYPERLOOP WORK?
If a Hyperloop system develops around the world it will change the way we travel says Bjarke Ingels, the founder of BIG, a design firm working on the project:
“Collective commuting with individual freedom at near supersonic speed: we are heading for a future where our mental map of the city is completely reconfigured, as our habitual understanding of distance and proximity – time and space – is warped by this new form of travel.”
The Hyperloop would likely be a bunch of small pods (rather than one large train) and would be on demand, leaving when you want to leave, and going directly to your chosen station.
The infrastructure will be made up of large tubes that run between destinations, and the pods will hover in these (they’d levitate rather than be on tracks). The environment within the main tube will be controlled so that there will only be a very small amount of air in the environment, creating a suction of sorts, so that the pods move from one end to the other (very, very quickly – kind of like a parcel in a postal shoot). They’re working on plans to run them either underwater or above ground.
Remember the transport pods that will take you from New York to Beijing in just two hours? Or from Abu Dhabi to Dubai in 15 minutes?
The plan shows that Hyperloop One intend to connect the two emirates, which are 150km apart. The map reveals that they are looking into connecting Dubai Airport, the Burj Khalifa, Dubai Marina, Al Maktoum Airport, Abu Dhabi Airport and the centre of Abu Dhabi.

• Clean, flush and put new ANTIFREEZE in the cooling system. As a general rule of thumb, this should be done every two years.
• Make sure HEATERS, DEFROSTERS and WIPERS work properly. Consider winter wiper blades and use cold weather washer fluid. As a general rule, wiper blades should be replaced every six months.
• Check the TIRE TREAD depth and TIRE PRESSURE. During winter, tire pressure should be checked weekly.
• Have the BRAKES checked. The braking system is the vehicle’s most important safety item.
• Have the EXHAUST SYSTEM checked for carbon monoxide leaks, which can be especially dangerous during cold weather driving when windows are closed.
• Check to see that exterior and interior LIGHTS work and headlights are properly aimed.
• Be diligent about changing the OIL AND FILTER at recommended intervals. Dirty oil can spell trouble in winter. Consider changing to “winter weight” oil if you live in a cold climate. Have your technician check the fuel, air and transmission filters at the same time.

The powerhouse beneath this moving work of art will be an advanced hybrid system consisting of an internal combustion engine paired with four electric motors in the wheels.
